About this unit

You may be aware of the basic evolutionary reflexes of fight or flight, but that barely scratches the surface of what science tells us about ourselves, others, and human evolution. If you’ve ever wanted to work on your basic scientific knowledge, and if you have a keen interest in human behaviour, then this online unit from Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University is for you.

The unit will teach you how science ‘works’ and enable you to gain an understanding of the evolutionary development of humans, which can relate to any number of human-focused disciplines.

The unit runs through a brief history of evolution and scientific ethics before focusing on the different explanations for behaviour. Main areas explored here are the senses and the nervous system, our perception, genetics and epigenetics, sexual selection, animal behaviour and communication.

With an understanding of how we have been shaped by evolution, you will be able to apply this knowledge to a range of human interactions and contexts.

The unit also contains adult themes. If you are under 16, you will need to complete a parental consent form, prior to enrolling in this unit.
