This online unit from Open Universities Australia and Swinburne University is ideally suited to students who have developed a particular interest in astrophotography and charge-coupled device (CCD) imaging.
The Major Project – Observational Astronomy will develop your ability to undertake research independently, and help you develop a practical understanding of image capturing techniques used within the field of astronomy. Throughout the duration of the unit you will also develop a greater understanding of the various research techniques and experimental investigations used by astronomers of today.
Completion of this unit will also deepen your academic prowess, as you'll be expected to produce a research proposal including a plan, research aims and objectives, as well as details of your expected outcomes.

This unit offers you an excellent opportunity to hone your individual research skills, while having access to a supervisor to guide your research. Completion of this unit also gives you a project which can be used to demonstrate to potential employers that you are capable of working effectively in an independent manner. Your report writing skills will be challenged, and as such, your written communication skills will improve. Through regular email contact with your designated supervisor, you will develop your ability to communicate in a professional manner.
