About this unit

Learn about the social and cultural contexts of drug use with the Drugs Across Cultures course unit offered by Macquarie University. Delivered online through Open Universities Australia, this unit will cover both legal and illegal drug use, addiction, and their impacts on the global economy.

From opiates, cocaine and cannabis to Viagra, tobacco and antiretrovirals, you will explore a wide range of drugs and their pharmacology. This unit delves into the physical, psychological and social aspects of drug addiction and treatment, as well as the social history of drugs in the US, UK and Australia.

Drug use is also explored through anthropological and ethnographic studies, giving you a broad understanding of the many ritual and symbolic components of drug use within group and community settings. You will gain an understanding of social, political and economic influences on drug use and its social perception, including gender, class, race and legislation. Regional and global factors that influence drug production and distribution will also be explored.
