Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University offer you the opportunity to learn more about the various topics that can be classified under the umbrella term, Practice of Modern Intelligence. By studying this unit, you will become familiar with the characteristics of intelligence systems, and will gain an understanding of the relationship between modern intelligence and security elements such as law enforcement, foreign and national security, as well as military domains.
You will discuss theories of intelligence, and develop familiarity with intelligence requirements, particularly with regard to planning and tasking. The unit also gives you the opportunity to engage in activities such as information collection, collation and analysis, as you familiarise yourself with processes of intelligence dissemination.
The unit breaks types of intelligence into several groups to optimise your learning – these groups include criminal intelligence, foreign intelligence, security intelligence, military intelligence and cyber intelligence. You will critique intelligence failures, and gain an awareness of factors in intelligence successes.
The curriculum for this online unit will focus on the intelligence function within Australia, but will also touch upon a selection of international intelligence communities.

This unit will challenge your ability to express your ideas and conclusions, pushing you to progress towards advanced written and oral communication skills. You will acquire competencies in expressing original opinions, and will be capable of coherently and persuasively backing them up with evidence from relevant literature.
Your research skills will develop over the duration of Practice of Modern Intelligence, and you will deepen your understanding of the process of synthesising relevant literature. The assessments included in this unit will require you to present your review of existing literature and your conclusions in a logical and appropriate manner.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
