The Leadership and Advocacy unit, delivered online by Open Universities Australia, will help you to understand, manage and develop core leadership and advocacy skills, and discover how these interact.
These skills are examined in the context of healthcare, social welfare, law and education, and how policies and practices in those fields can be influenced and developed by experienced leadership.
The unit teaches a solid understanding of central concepts such as structure, culture and change within the human services sector, and how conflict resolutions are best handled. You will also study the requirements and legal responsibilities of employers and accrediting bodies within a wide range of human service structures, to enable you to identify, interpret, outline, evaluate and justify these in context.

This unit will provide you with a solid understanding of how various styles of advocacy and leadership can impact the provision of human services.
After successfully completing your studies, you will have learned how to explore the social forces dominant in the human services sector in Australia. You will be able to critically evaluate current issues surrounding policy changes in the human services industry, and examine what impact any changes in legislature and regulations can have.
Finally you will be shown how to prepare a range of key documents such as reports, proposals and policy/procedures documents for human services administration and also how to use different methodologies to research and handle issues relating to leadership and advocacy in the human services sector.

This course can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
