About this unit

Contemporary Debates in Social Work Practice is an online unit provided by Open Universities Australia and Griffith University for students studying the Master of Social Work.

It builds on foundational social work units, linking theory and practice, and seeks to explore contemporary directions and debates in social work, as well as those arising from social and political institutions. The unit also begins the process of encouraging students to critically reflect upon their identity as social work professionals and articulate their stance on key professional issues.

Understanding the nature of changes to the social work profession is extremely important for its survival as a discipline and practice; students are encouraged to consider social work on a local, national and international level, as well as the micro and macro structures impacting on the profession.

How will this unit advance my career?

This unit aims to equip students with a greater understanding of the historical and contemporary social work context, which is crucial for the future of the profession. By learning about the current debates surrounding their career and social work's position in our society, students will be able to recognise the key challenges and threats to social work as a contemporary discipline. It will also encourage students to carve out their own individual and collective directions for moving forward in the changing environment of the social work profession. Working effectively with peers and focussing on communicating effectively as a team will also equip students with essential skills for diverse social work fields and settings. Griffith University aims to prepare its graduates to be leaders in the social work field by instilling them with knowledge and skill in the discipline. It also seeks to encourage effective communication and leadership, innovative and creative critical judgement and social responsibility and engagement in communities. By highlighting the wider contexts of the social work field, students will become increasingly competent in culturally diverse and international environments, giving their career the potential to take on an international scope.
