About this unit

Leadership for Sports Coaches is an online unit provided by Open Universities Australia in association with Griffith University. In essence, it teaches you theories and strategies for managing groups of people or individuals within a sports context. Learning these ideas will stand you in good stead for working as a professional sports coach, and allow you to instil a holistic culture of development for whatever teams you work with.

To begin with, this unit covers the basic principles of leadership before moving onto the various types of leadership style. These styles will then be evaluated and critiqued, in order to give a wider understanding of the leader’s role as a mentor. Other themes covered by the unit include how to apply motivational techniques, how to develop teamwork, and how coaches can best deal with the media.

Ultimately, successfully completing this unit will provide you with a range of techniques to employ in order to take a sports team to victory. Not only will you be able to develop your own unique coaching style, but you'll also be able to analyse its relative merits within a collaborative community, finessing your coaching approach.
