About this unit

You can be a great communicator in person but when it comes to putting pen to paper, or the fingers to the keyboard, a bit of know-how goes a long way.

This online unit of study focuses on the structures of good writing across a wide range of genres, so that you have the frameworks you need to produce your best work.

Delivered online by Open Universities Australia, in partnership with Griffith University, this unit starts off with the unique communication features of writing and the ethics of putting work out for public consumption. Once you have these considerations in mind, you will be taken through the different forms and reasons for writing, including the features of specific genres.

While you get to know the writing landscape, you will also be learning practical lessons as you undertake writing tasks throughout the unit. This will provide you with experience in handling feedback, managing your time and conducting research and background reading.

You will get to focus on particular writing tasks along the way including works of short fiction, blurbs and advertisements, prequels and sequels, and dialogue. The unit also covers editing, blogging and how to get your writing published.
