About this unit

This Drama Screenwriting unit by Open Universities Australia and Griffith University offers fantastic insight into the intricacies of screenwriting. If you enrol in this unit, you will learn to critically analyse the construction of drama stories for both the big and small screen.

Upon completion of this online unit, you will have an in-depth understanding of character construction as well as various approaches to designing dialogue and narratives. You will have examined the processes of developing solid story ideas for drama, and will have gained the skills necessary to pitch these ideas in an effective manner.

You will also become familiar with a selection of the standard modes of scriptwriting, and will be encouraged to develop competencies in editing and redrafting processes. Upon finishing this unit, you will have transformed your initial ideas into a polished final draft.

How will this unit advance my career?

Taking this unit will allow you to develop a range of skills that will be helpful in forging a career in screenwriting. You will become familiar with the standard, industry recognised formats for script presentation, including logline, screenplay design plan and draft script. Throughout the unit various useful skills will be taught, ensuring that you can competently construct characters and design screen narratives.

You will develop the ability to draft, redraft and adapt your work, until you have eventually transformed your initial ideas into a professionally formatted final draft. You will receive feedback at several points during the unit including on completion of your initial logline, once you finish your first draft, and on completion of your second draft, which will be complete with redrafting notes.

Transferrable skills to be gained from this unit include analytical and critical thinking along with editing, proofreading and redrafting skills. You will develop your skills in written communication through the exercises undertaken during this unit. You will also work on your ability to pitch ideas, which is also exceptionally useful across industries.
