You can exit the program after four units and receive the Graduate Certificate, after eight units to receive the Graduate Diploma or after twelve units for the Master.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this course you must have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or relevant work experience.

Study periods

Open Universities courses are offered in specific study intakes every year, known as Study Periods or Sessions. This means more flexibility as you can choose when to start studying.

If you are studying undergraduate units you can start at the beginning of any of the four Study Periods each year, each lasting 13 weeks. Most postgraduate courses are offered in three Sessions per year, with each Session lasting 14 weeks.

Exams are usually held in the week following the end of each Study Period or Session.

Areas of study

The Master of Arts (writing) program provides you with the opportunity to develop:

  • A deep understanding of a range of writing genres
  • An ability to make links between developments and opportunities across diverse writing environments
  • An ability to connect writing theory and writing practice
  • A knowledge of trends in writing, media and new practices
  • Communication skills within professional and creative areas
  • Creative capacities related to all forms and genres of writing

Shorter programs

If you choose not to study the entire Master of Arts (Writing) program you may be able to complete an alternative program. This is beneficial for students who need to develop a specialisation or prefer not to commit to the whole study period.

Depending on the units studied, you can exit with a Graduate Diploma of Arts in Writing or Graduate Certificate of Arts in Writing.
