About this unit

This online Writing Gothic and Speculative Fiction unit from Open Universities Australia and Griffith University examines these genres, where safe suburban homes, families, planets, cities and the human body are all vulnerable to authoritarian powers, strange beings, dark spaces, unknown territories, and the return of the repressed.

Students will examine the foundation ideas relevant to these narrative forms, and engage with fiction, from a writer’s perspective, by reading and observing examples of these genres. You will also learn to analyse and discuss ideas relevant to creative writing in your own work and that of others.
