What do you do in your job?

I work in the business services area of Pitcher Partners which involves doing various tasks such as preparing income tax returns and business and instalment activity statements. I also help prepare financial accounts, help maintain company secretarial records and liaise with numerous government agencies such as the ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) and the ATO (Australian Tax Office). It’s a very diverse area and I am learning a lot from it.

What do you like best about your job?

I like the variety of work I get to do. In business services there’s a large range of work which involves dealing with different entities such as individuals, companies and superannuation funds. Because I work on different areas for a particular client, I’m not just doing one thing all the time.

What do you least like about your job?

The part of my job I enjoy least is administration, but every undergraduate in the accounting profession goes through this.

How did you get a job while still an undergraduate?

I applied for a job online through a recruitment agency and they conducted an initial interview with me. I gave the recruitment officer my resume and she went though all the jobs that were available that suited my level and experience. The recruitment officer then sent out my resume to the HR departments of various firms. One of the firms happened to be Pitcher Partners. The HR manager at Pitcher Partners reviewed my resume, contacted the recruitment officer and lined up an interview with me. After the interview with the HR manager I met with a senior member of staff and was then offered a role with the firm.

Where do you hope to go from here?

I’m working as an intermediate accountant at the moment which is basically a position for an undergraduate with three years experience. Once I’ve finished uni I’d like to work towards a more senior level in the near future and start my CA.
