Biennale of Sydney; 18 June – 7 September
Komi Sellathurai, 19 August 2008
The biggest international event in the contemporary art world tumbled and twirled into Sydney with the theme for this year ‘Revolutions – Forms that Turn.’ And already it has created much controversy over an exhibit with a dead horse suspended from the ceiling at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). It is bound to be the talk of the town for a while as artists and art lovers around the world gather on our shores for a myriad of free and ticketed events.
Biennale means ‘every other year’ in Italian. Held every two years, countries around the world tailor the event to represent their cities. The 16th Biennale of Sydney started in 1973 with 37 artists. This year it features over 180 artists from 15 countries with a new exhibition space in Cockatoo Island.
