Whether you want to teach the ABCs to kids in their formative years, give out pen licences in primary school or discuss molecules with high school students, there is a teaching degree for you.

The teaching industry encompasses a range of opportunities for anyone interested in making their mark.

You may be wondering, ‘what qualifications do I need to be a teacher?’ To answer this question, you must first decide on what you want to teach.

Teaching can be broken up into different levels.

    Early childhood

Having contact with children at such a young age means you are an important figure in their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development. Teaching at this level requires activities designed to facilitate this growth, particularly in motor skills, recognition, basic numeracy and literacy, and personal hygiene.

As an early childhood teacher, you will need to have a creative spirit, great communication skills and a love of children.

    Primary school

Primary school teachers are tasked with teaching literacy, numeracy, social science, creative expression and physical education. Dealing with young children, they are integral to their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.

Working in primary teaching, you will need to keep your energy levels and patience high. Primary teaching gives you great scope to help develop students’ interests and abilities.

    High school

Working at a secondary school level gives you the opportunity to play an important role in the maturation and development of teenagers, during an impressionable time of their lives.

You will also have the opportunity to teach subjects that you’re passionate about. Guiding students who are approaching adulthood requires great communication and critical thinking skills.

To find out what qualifications you need to be a teacher, figure out what level appeals to you. We have a range of online teaching courses to help you find your path.
