Responding to selection criteria is the area that trips up most people applying for a government job. When answering the selection criteria it is important to know exactly what the employer is looking for and respond correctly.

An answer consisting of one sentence is simply not enough. Think about how you meet each selection criterion and list examples of relevant skills, experience, incidents, training and personal qualities.

Below are some sample selection criteria responses to help you put together a winning job application and land that dream government job!
Sound oral and written communication skills

Ability to apply academic knowledge and concepts to practical situations

Proven experience using information and technology


Able to operate effectively in a team, contributing positively to team operations and working relationships

Ability to contribute ideas and demonstrate initiative and flexibility


Demonstrated analytical and research skills


Awareness of Occupational Health & Safety issues

Demonstrated literacy, numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail

Ability to file, retrieve, shelve, and physically organise materials in a high volume environment

Demonstrated client service focus and experience in a client service environment

Good general knowledge with an interest in reading and current affairs
