About this course

The Bachelor of Communication (Digital Media), offered by Deakin University, prepares students for exciting careers in digital media, film or advertising.

This dynamic undergraduate course will get you ready to adapt to shifting communication climates in digital media and cultural industries. You'll study topics such as social media and surveillance, advertising and consumerism, media genre and representation, issues of privacy and censorship, celebrity and media industry processes of planning and production, piracy and intellectual property.

The course consists of 18 core units and 6 elective units, encompassing the examination and creation of virtual and non-virtual media texts.

Eligibility

To be eligible to study this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • All applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements.
  • Entry for school leavers will be based on their performance in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, with pre-requisite units 3 and 4; a study score of at least 25 in English EAL (English as an additional language) or 20 in English other than EAL. Applicants will be selected in accordance with the published clearly-in Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for that year.
  • Entry for non school leavers will be based on their performance in:
    • a Certificate IV in a related discipline; OR
    • a Diploma in any discipline; OR
    • successful completion of relevant study at an accredited higher education institution equivalent to at least two Deakin University units; OR
    • other evidence of academic capability judged to be equivalent for example relevant work or life experience.

Eligible students can apply for the Australian government's HECS-HELP loan to cover the upfront costs of all or part of your fees.

Deakin University also offers scholarships to successful applicants.

You may be eligible to receive HECS-HELP for this course!

This course can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $55,874 (2017-18 income year).
