Steps to Become a Biologist
Step 1: Build strong foundations in secondary school
Start with Year 12 subjects that support biological science. Focus on Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. A solid ATAR score improves your entry options for science degrees. Taking part in science clubs or fairs helps too.
Step 2: Complete a Bachelor of Science (BSc) with a biology major
Enrol in a Bachelor of Science at an Australian university, majoring in Biological Sciences, Ecology, Marine Biology, or Microbiology. This degree takes three years full-time. You will cover genetics, ecology, cell biology, and field methods. Look for courses with strong lab and fieldwork content.
Step 3: Gain practical experience during your degree

Step 4: Complete an Honours year to build research depth
An Honours year adds one year full-time to your bachelor degree at your university. You carry out an original research project under expert guidance. It builds research skills and is often needed for postgrad entry. Most Australian universities offer Honours as a fourth-year path.
Step 5: Join a professional body and grow your network
Join a professional group such as the Ecological Society of Australia or the Australian Society for Microbiology. Membership gives you access to events, research papers, and career help. Attending these events helps you meet researchers and employers in your area.
Step 6: Pursue a PhD for research and academic careers
For research or academic careers, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the standard next step. A PhD in Biology or a related field takes three to four years full-time at a university. Many PhD students receive a living stipend. Entry requires Honours or an equal postgraduate degree.
