About this course

The Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, offered by Open Colleges, opens the door to students wishing to pursue careers in nursing. Graduates will be prepared to pursue assistant nursing and support positions in a variety of healthcare settings.

Students will learn the fundamentals of providing assistance to clients according to a care plan and under the supervision of a health professional. You'll also learn how to perform patient observations, how to work effectively with culturally diverse clients, and how to use medical terminology, among many other skills required to provide care in a nursing assistant role.

The course comprises one full day or two evenings of attendance per week for facilitated learning and practical skills sessions. Face-to-face attendance is supplemented through completion of self-directed learning packages, workbooks and assessment materials, and 120 hours of practical work placement is undertaken to gain valuable on-the-job experience.

Eligibility

To be eligible to study this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • You must be an Australian citizen or have a permanent humanitarian visa or certain temporary visas with study rights; AND
  • Reside in Western Australia; AND
  • Complete the Core Skills Test; AND
  • You will also need to:
    • Have successfully completed Year 10 or its equivalent in Australia, OR
    • Apply based on your work and/or life experience.
