Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Skills First Program?

Skills First is a Victorian Government funding initiative that supports eligible individuals to access low-cost or free nationally recognised training. The program aims to provide people with the skills needed for in-demand jobs. More at vic.gov.au.

Who is eligible for Skills First funding?

To be eligible, you must live in Victoria, be an Australian or New Zealand citizen (or hold a permanent visa), and meet specific course and qualification limits. People under 20 or enrolling in higher-level courses may qualify even with previous study history.

Can I access Skills First if I already have a degree?

Yes, you may still be eligible if you’re enrolling in a higher qualification than you’ve completed, or if you haven’t accessed Skills First funding previously. Check your eligibility with a Skills First provider.

What does the funding cover?

The program subsidises tuition fees for eligible courses. However, students may still pay some materials or student fees. Some TAFEs and RTOs offer fee-free courses under Skills First.

Are all providers eligible to offer Skills First courses?

No. Only training organisations that have been contracted by the Victorian Government as Skills First providers can deliver funded courses. Always check a provider’s eligibility before enrolling.
