Steps to Become an Assessor

Step 1: Build experience in your specialist industry

Before becoming an Assessor, build solid hands-on experience in the field you want to assess. Most RTOs require at least three to five years of relevant industry work. This experience is a key requirement under ASQA’s Standards for RTOs 2015. You must show current competency in what you assess.

Step 2: Complete the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122)

Enrol in the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) at a TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO). This is the minimum qualification required by ASQA to work as an Assessor in the VET sector. The course takes 6 to 18 months and covers assessment design, evidence gathering, validation, and feedback. Delivery is available online, face to face, or in a blended format.

Step 3: Complete your supervised assessment practice

As part of TAE40122, you must conduct a set number of supervised assessments. These form your evidence portfolio for the qualification. Choose a workplace mentor or industry contact to oversee your practice assessments. Real-world experience builds the skills you need to assess accurately and fairly.

Step 4: Apply for Assessor roles at RTOs or TAFEs

Once qualified, apply for Assessor or trainer-assessor positions at RTOs, TAFEs, or enterprise training units. Many entry-level roles combine training delivery with assessment. Tailor your application to highlight both your industry experience and your TAE40122 qualification. Check the National Training Register at training.gov.au for details on the TAE Training Package.

Step 5: Maintain your professional currency each year

ASQA requires all Assessors to keep skills current in two areas: VET practice and their specialist industry. Complete at least one professional development activity per year in each area. Keep clear records of all activities, as these may be reviewed during an ASQA audit. NCVER and VELG Training offer events and resources for VET practitioners across Australia.

They give candidates clear, honest feedback on their work. Assessors join validation sessions with colleagues to keep assessment tools fair. They attend industry events and workshops to stay current.
