Steps to become a CAD Drafter
Step 1: Complete the Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting (MEM40422)
Enrol in the Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting (MEM40422) at a TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO). This takes 12 to 18 months full-time and covers CAD software use, technical drawing standards, and project records. It is the most widely recognised entry-level qualification for drafting roles in engineering and manufacturing in Australia.
If your interest is in residential design, consider the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting (CPP40121) instead. Both are available through TAFE and RTOs nationally, and both qualify you for entry-level CAD drafting roles.
