About HECS-HELP

These courses can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, you may not need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees directly to the provider on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,435 (2024-25 income year).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HECS-HELP and how does it work?

HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that helps eligible students pay for their Commonwealth-supported university courses. You begin repaying the loan through the tax system when your income reaches a certain threshold. More at StudyAssist.gov.au.

Who is eligible for HECS-HELP?

You must be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa and be enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP). Residency requirements apply. Full details at StudyAssist.

What’s the current income threshold for HECS repayments?

As of 2025, the minimum repayment threshold is around $51,550. Your repayments are automatically deducted via the ATO. Visit ato.gov.au for up-to-date figures.

Do I pay interest on my HECS-HELP loan?

There’s no interest, but your loan is indexed annually based on inflation. This keeps the value of your debt aligned with cost of living changes.

Does HECS-HELP cover all university costs?

It covers your tuition fees, but you still need to pay for textbooks, equipment, and student services fees unless your provider waives them.
