Steps to Become a Childcare Educator

Step 1: Complete the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121)

Enrol in the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121) at a TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO). This is the minimum qualification needed to work as a Childcare Educator in most Australian states and territories. It takes around 12 months full-time or up to 18 months part-time. Step 2: Obtain Your Working With Children Check

Apply for a Working With Children Check in your state or territory before starting paid work or placement. This is a legal requirement for anyone working with children in Australia. The process varies by state and usually takes 1 to 4 weeks. Paid workers pay a small fee, while volunteers get it free. Check the relevant authority in your state for the current requirements.

Step 3: Complete Work Placement and Apply for Entry-Level Roles

This qualification lets you work as a lead educator and increases your pay under the Children’s Services Award 2010. Many educators study part-time while working.

Step 5: Register on the National Early Childhood Worker Register

From 2026, all educators in approved services must register on the National Early Childhood Worker Register. This register is managed by ACECQA. Make sure your qualifications are current and that your registration is active before starting at a new service. This is a regulatory requirement under the updated National Law. Step 6: Pursue Further Study for Senior or Teacher Roles

To work as an early childhood teacher or centre director, complete a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) at a university. This pathway opens the door to the highest pay levels in the sector.
