Step 1: Build Your Foundation with a Trade Qualification or Certificate IV

Many builders start with a trade apprenticeship, such as the Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220). This takes 3–4 years with an employer through TAFE or a group training organisation. Others complete the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40120) at a TAFE or RTO. This takes 1–2 years full-time or part-time. Both pathways provide the technical and regulatory knowledge needed to work in construction.

Step 2: Gain On-Site Experience in a Supervisory Role

Work as a site supervisor, foreperson, or construction manager to build the practical skills required for registration. Most state licensing bodies require at least 2 years of recent, relevant experience. Keep records of the projects you have managed and the trades you have supervised. Include the types of work completed at each stage. This evidence is a key part of your licence application.

Step 3: Apply for Your Builder’s Licence or Registration

Apply for a builder’s licence through the relevant authority in your state or territory. In Queensland, this is the QBCC. In Victoria, it is the VBA. In NSW, apply through Service NSW. Other states have their own licensing bodies. You will typically need proof of qualifications, experience records, and may need to pass a competency assessment.

Step 4: Consider the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220)

To take on larger or more complex projects, complete the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220). Study at a TAFE or RTO. This qualification takes 1–2 years full-time or can be done part-time while working. It covers contract management, project planning, financial management, and advanced site supervision. It also meets the educational requirements for unrestricted builder registration in some states.

Step 5: Join an Industry Association and Maintain Your CPD

Join the Housing Industry Association (HIA) or your state’s Master Builders Association to access support, resources, and professional development. Most state licensing bodies require builders to complete continuing professional development (CPD) each year to keep their licence active. Stay up to date with the National Construction Code (NCC), new materials, and Australian Standards changes. This keeps your work quality high and your registration current.
