A horticulturalist grows, cares for, and manages plants in nurseries, gardens, parks, farms, and botanical gardens across Australia. They use plant science and practical skills to keep plants healthy and landscapes looking their best. This is an exciting career for anyone who loves working outdoors and making things grow.
Australia’s horticulture industry is huge. It was worth $18 billion in 2023-24 (ABS, 2024). There are jobs in every state, from tropical fruit farms in Queensland to cool-climate nurseries in Victoria. You could work with native plants, food crops, ornamental gardens, or even sports turf.
Day-to-day work is hands-on and varied. Horticulturalists plant, propagate, prune, and treat pests. They also manage irrigation, design garden spaces, and keep records of plant care. No two days are exactly the same.
If you enjoy the outdoors, science, and seeing your work grow, this is a great career to start. You can build your skills with a Certificate III qualification and grow from there.
Horticulture offers solid career prospects in Australia. About 32,600 people work in horticulture and gardening roles nationally, with moderate future demand projected (yourcareer.gov.au, 2025). New roles are opening up in urban greening, community gardens, and sustainable agriculture.
Pay starts around $48,000 a year for entry-level positions. Most horticulturalists earn around $63,000 per year, and experienced specialists can earn $90,000 or more (PayScale, 2026). Full-time hours are standard, but part-time and seasonal work is common in nurseries and on farms.
