Steps to Become a Care Service Employee

Step 1: Complete the Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021)

Enrol in the Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021) at a TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO). This qualification takes 12 to 18 months full-time. Part-time study can take up to 2 years. The course covers personal care, communication, infection control, and how to move clients safely. You must also complete at least 120 hours of guided work placement. This is the standard entry-level qualification for care work in Australia.

Step 2: Obtain Your Required Checks

Before you can work in aged care, you need a National Police Check. Most employers also need an NDIS Worker Screening Check if you will work with NDIS clients. Some states require a Working with Vulnerable People Check or Working with Children Check. Allow 2 to 4 weeks for these checks to be processed. Your employer or RTO can guide you on which checks apply in your state.

Step 3: Complete First Aid and CPR Training

Complete HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) at a registered training organisation. Both can be finished in 1 to 2 days. First Aid must be renewed every 3 years. CPR must be renewed every year. These are standard requirements for aged care work across Australia.

Step 4: Apply for Entry-Level Care Roles

Apply to aged care providers for roles such as Personal Care Worker, Care Service Employee, or Support Worker. Look for work in aged care homes, home care services, and community programs. Many employers provide on-the-job training for new workers. Building up experience in different care settings will grow your skills and career prospects.

Step 5: Advance with the Certificate IV in Ageing Support (CHC43015)

Once you have some experience, consider completing the Certificate IV in Ageing Support (CHC43015) at a TAFE or RTO. This takes around 12 months full-time. It covers complex care, guiding other workers, and advanced communication skills. This qualification opens the door to senior roles, team leader positions, and special areas such as dementia care.
