Step 1: Complete the HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding

Enrol in the HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding at HIMAA or an approved RTO. This is the standard entry need for coding roles in Australia since June 2023. It covers medical terms, ICD-10-AM and ACHI coding, and the Australian Coding Standards. The course takes around 12 to 24 months online or part-time, based on your prior health experience.

Step 2: Complete a Work Placement or Trainee Role

Apply for a trainee coder or entry-level position at a public or private hospital. Most employers ask for 6 to 12 months of guided coding practice before you work alone. Some RTOs include a placement unit in the diploma, which can count toward this time. Work on accuracy, compliance with the Australian Coding Standards, and speed on a range of cases.

Step 3: Join HIMAA and Build Your Network

Become a member of the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA). Membership gives you updates, coding bulletins, study events, and a peer network across Australia. HIMAA is the peak body for Clinical Coders and Health Information Managers. Active membership shows employers you are serious about the field.

Step 4: Earn the HIMAA CHIM Credential

Apply for the HIMAA Credentialing in Health Information Management (CHIM) post-nominal. This shows your skills are current and meet the national standard. You need work experience and CPD hours to qualify. The CHIM helps your case for senior coding, auditing, or health information management roles.

Step 5: Progress to Senior or Specialist Roles

With experience, you can move into roles such as Senior Coder, Coding Auditor, or Clinical Documentation Specialist. Some coders move to Health Information Manager by finishing a HIMAA-approved degree. Senior coders earn $101,000 to $111,000 per year (2025 NSW Enterprise Agreement, via talentmed.edu.au). Ongoing CPD is the key to reaching these higher-level positions.

Clinical Coders spend their days reviewing patient records and assigning the right codes to diagnoses, treatments, and procedures. They enter data from medical files into computer systems, check records, and produce reports for the health team. When a record is unclear, they contact the doctor or nurse who treated the patient to get more detail.
