Steps to Become a Geologist

Step 1: Complete a Bachelor of Science in Geology or Earth Sciences

Enrol in a Bachelor of Science majoring in Geology, Geoscience, or Earth Sciences at an Australian university. This degree takes 3 years full-time. It covers mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, structural geology, and field methods. Most programs include at least one field camp, giving you hands-on experience from early on. No national VET code applies. This is an AQF Level 7 university qualification. It is offered at institutions such as the University of Western Australia, UQ, and UNSW.

Step 2: Complete an Honours Year in Geology or Geoscience

After your bachelor’s degree, complete a one-year Honours program (AQF Level 8) in Geology or Geoscience. Honours is expected for most professional and graduate roles in Australia. Step 3: Gain Field and Industry Experience

After gaining at least 5 years of professional experience, apply for the Registered Professional Geoscientist (RPGeo) credential through the AIG. RPGeo registration is recognised across the mining and resources sector and improves your career prospects. It requires a portfolio of evidence and regular continuing professional development (CPD).

Step 5: Consider Postgraduate Study for Specialist Roles

To specialise in hydrogeology, geophysics, petroleum geology, or research, a postgraduate degree is worth pursuing. Master’s programs take 1 to 2 years full-time at an Australian university. A doctorate typically takes 3 to 4 years and is suited to research or academic careers.
