Steps to Become an Information Systems Architect

Step 1: Complete a Bachelor of Information Technology or Computer Science

Enrol in a Bachelor of Information Technology or Bachelor of Computer Science at an Australian university. These degrees take three to four years full-time. They cover systems design, networking, programming, and database management. Both are the standard entry point for an ICT architecture career.

Step 2: Build Experience as a Systems or Network Engineer

Start your career in a junior systems engineer, network engineer, or IT analyst role. This hands-on experience usually takes two to four years. It teaches you how real-world systems are built, connected, and maintained. It is the practical base that architecture roles build on.

Step 3: Earn the TOGAF Architecture Certification

Complete the TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) certification. TOGAF is the industry standard for enterprise architecture in Australia. The exam can be taken online in two parts. It shows employers that you can design and govern complex information systems using a structured approach.

Step 4: Join the ACS and Pursue Certified Professional Status

Become a member of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and work towards ACS Certified Professional (CP) status. CP status shows employers that your skills and ethics meet the national ICT standard. The ACS also gives you access to events, technical groups, and professional development resources.

Step 5: Complete a Cloud Architecture Certification

Complete a cloud architecture certification to build in-demand skills. Good options include AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert, and Google Professional Cloud Architect. Cloud skills are now expected in most senior architecture roles. These exams can be done online while you work full-time.

Step 6: Progress to a Senior or Principal Architect Role

With five or more years of engineering and architecture experience, apply for senior or principal architect roles. At this level, you lead architecture strategy, mentor junior staff, and guide major technology decisions. Many architects go on to become Chief Information Officer (CIO) or move into other tech executive roles.
