About Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Courses

What happens when the skills and experience you already have could count towards a formal qualification? Recognition of Prior Learning! Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that assesses your existing knowledge, skills and work experience against the requirements of a course, rather than assuming you need to start from scratch. This might come from previous study, on-the-job experience, volunteer work or even life experience, depending on how closely it matches what the course covers.

If your experience is found to meet some or all of a unit’s requirements, you may not need to complete that unit again. This can reduce the overall time and cost of your course, and in some cases lets you fast-track straight into more advanced units. The process usually involves providing evidence of your experience, such as references, work samples or a portfolio, which is then assessed by the training provider.

RPL is assessed on a case-by-case basis, so the amount of credit you receive will depend on your individual background and the specific course you’re applying for. You may also hear this process referred to as “skills recognition”, “credit transfer” or “recognition of current competency (RCC)
