Course Rundown

The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) is a nationally recognised qualification offered by Swinburne Open Education, designed for those who want to build a meaningful career supporting older Australians. Delivered entirely online with a mandatory work placement component, the course can be completed in 12 to 18 months at a self-paced rate, making it well suited to people who need to balance study with existing work or personal commitments. Please note that this course is currently only available to students based in Victoria, Australia.

Throughout the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing), students develop a broad range of practical and interpersonal skills needed to work effectively in aged care settings. Core learning areas cover providing person-centred and individualised support, promoting independence and wellbeing, understanding healthy body systems, communicating effectively in health and community service environments, working with diverse people, and applying legal and ethical frameworks. Elective units extend this foundation into areas such as supporting people living with dementia, delivering care using a palliative approach, providing loss and grief support, and working effectively within the aged care sector. Assessments are varied and include short answer questions, case studies, projects, video role plays, and direct observation in the workplace or a simulated environment.

A minimum of 127 hours of structured workplace learning and assessment is required to complete the course, giving students the opportunity to apply their skills in a real aged care environment. Students are responsible for sourcing their own placement and may need to meet workplace compliance requirements such as police checks or vaccination evidence. Graduates of the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) are prepared to pursue roles across government, not-for-profit, and community organisations in areas including in-home care, residential aged care, and related support services.
