Steps to Become a Tax Agent
Tax agents in Australia must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). You need an approved study credential, relevant tax work, and a fit and proper character check.
Step 1: Complete an Approved Accounting Qualification
You have two main study paths. The first is a Bachelor of Accounting or Bachelor of Business (Accounting Major) at an Australian university. This takes 3 years full-time. The second is the Diploma of Accounting (FNS50222) at a TAFE or RTO. This takes 12 to 18 months full-time or around 2 years part-time. The diploma path also needs you to complete set commercial law and tax law units set by the TPB. Check the current needs at tpb.gov.au before you enrol.
Step 2: Gain Supervised Tax Work Experience
You must complete supervised tax work before you can register. If you hold a bachelor degree, you need at least 400 hours of tax work in the past 5 years. If you hold a diploma, you need at least 1,000 hours in the past 5 years. Keep clear records of your work. When you apply, you must submit a statement from a supervising registered tax agent.
Step 3: Join a Recognised Professional Body
Apply for membership with CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ (CA ANZ), or the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). Voting membership of a recognised body can cut the required experience hours under some TPB paths. These bodies also give you access to CPE resources, tax updates, and professional networks.
Step 4: Register with the Tax Practitioners Board
Apply online at tpb.gov.au using the My Profile system. You must pay a $281 registration fee. Provide proof of identity, copies of your credentials, and a statement of tax work experience. You must also hold professional indemnity insurance. The TPB aims to process complete applications within 30 days.
Step 5: Meet Ongoing CPE Requirements
Registered tax agents must complete at least 90 hours of CPE every 3 years. At least 10 hours of structured activity must be done each year. Attend professional development events, ATO webinars, and courses from your professional body to stay current with tax law. Keeping up with CPE protects your registration and your clients.
A tax agent’s day is a mix of numbers, client calls, and keeping up with the law. They prepare and lodge tax returns, review financial records, and check for deductions their clients might have missed. They also help clients plan ahead to reduce their tax bill legally. When the ATO gets in touch, the tax agent handles it. No two clients are exactly the same, which keeps the work interesting.
Tax agents do a variety of tasks every day. Their work spans individual returns, business compliance, and strategic advice. Getting into this career means being comfortable with numbers, laws, and client conversations.
- Client consultation – talking with clients about their financial situation and tax needs
- Tax return preparation – compiling and lodging income tax returns for individuals and businesses
- Tax planning – advising on ways to legally reduce tax obligations
- ATO compliance – checking that clients meet all ATO deadlines and requirements
- Research and updates – following changes to tax law and passing on key information to clients
- Record keeping – maintaining accurate client records and financial documentation
- Audit support – helping clients respond to ATO audit requests
- Client education – explaining tax concepts in plain language
- Professional development – completing CPE to keep TPB registration current
To work as a tax agent, you need a mix of technical and people skills. The technical side includes knowing tax law, reading financial records, and working well with numbers. Most tax agents are also skilled in accounting software like Xero or MYOB.
The people side matters just as much. You will work with clients from all walks of life and need to explain tax in plain language. Good listening and staying calm under pressure are real assets, especially at end of financial year.
Tax law changes every year. Keeping up with those changes is part of the job. Your TPB registration depends on completing CPE (continuing professional education). This keeps your knowledge current and your clients protected.
